Dell XPS 15 9530 comes with 40 W to 50 W TGP GeForce RTX 4070 graphics
The 2023 XPS 15 9530 equipped with Intel 13th gen Core-H CPUs and mobile Nvidia GeForce 40 GPUs is now out in the wild. The model is notable for carrying the mobile GeForce RTX 4070 even though such a GPU is more often found on thicker gaming laptops. Potential buyers may be curious about the TGP rating as a result, but an official Dell response on their own product page has received an overwhelmingly negative response from readers as shown by the screenshot below.
We decided to take it upon ourselves to find the max TGP of the GPU with a unit provided to us from the manufacturer. A quick look at Nvidia Control Panel reveals a maximum graphics power of 50 W.
In practice, however, it's not uncommon for the actual graphics power to be slightly lower than the stated maximum. When running Witcher 3 to represent typical gaming loads, for example, the actual graphics power as reported by GPU-Z and HWiNFO appears to be a stable ~43 W with a maximum of 46 W. Dell has confirmed with us that they are targeting 40 W with the RTX 4070 in the XPS 15 9530, but you'll more likely get between 40 W and 45 W in real-world conditions based on our experience.
Dedicated gaming laptops with the RTX 4070 like the Uniwill GM6PX7X may aim for 90 W to 110 W or over 2x the TGP of the same GPU in the XPS 15. The performance deficit between the XPS 15 and gaming laptops with the RTX 4070 can be significant, but it varies depending on the workload as detailed in our full review of the system.
