Borderlands, Star Wars: KOTOR developers to find new homes as turmoil rips through gaming industry
In case you're unaware, the gaming industry has had a rough start to the year, with even some of the largest game studios having to resort to lay-offs and restructuring efforts. As we reported earlier this week, Sony Interactive Entertainment has shuttered a London studio and laid off about 8% of its workforce. Now, news has emerged (via Kotaku) that Embracer Group AB's ongoing restructuring efforts may result in the sale of Gearbox Entertainment by the end of March 2024.
The latest news from reported insider sources indicates that Embracer Group plans to conclude the sale of legendary Borderlands developer, Gearbox Entertainment, sometime in March. In an alleged town hall meeting, Gearbox CEO, Randy Pitchford informed Gearbox employees that the decision was being made whether the studio would remain with Embracer, buy itself out and go indie, or sell to another parent company.
Allegedly, Embracer and Gearbox have come to an agreement that selling to a parent company will be the way forward, but as of the time of writing, Embracer has not offered any clarification, nor is there any indication of where Gearbox, which Embracer purchased for a whopping $1.3 billion as recently as 2021, will end up.
Similarly, recent reports from Reuters's Jason Schreier indicate that Embracer is looking to offload Saber Interactive, developers of the upcoming Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake, for a sum of $500 million. As of now, Reuters reports that Saber Interactive will continue working on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic after the studio is bought out by a group of private investors. For the time being, Saber Interactive will supposedly operate as a private, independent entity moving forward.
