Beelink just announced that its Multi-Functional EX docking station for mini PCs is now open-source with free plans for anyone to use. Along with the announcement, Beelink published documentation to build the PCIe-enabled docking station. It hopes that access to the plans for the accessory will enrich the mini PC ecosystem.

The Beelink Multi-Functional EX Docking Station is a dock for Beelink's mini PCs that adds an external GPU, additional storage, and an extra USB Type-A port via a standard PCIe interface. In a recent announcement, Beelink has made the EX Docking Station open-source and openly published the plans and electrical diagrams for the docking station.

Although Beelink has seemingly not provided 3D-printing-ready CAD files for the enclosure, the 2D drawings [PDF] and definitions [PDF] documents detail the electrical layout and specifications as well as the physical specifications for the interface required for the mini PC to dock to the station. With these specs and diagrams, basically anyone with a little electrical engineering knowledge should be able to draw up their own enclosure and engineer their own custom eGPU enclosure.

Of course, since the EX dock and its specifications are built around Beelink's mini PCs, a wider range of accessories will incentivise potential mini PC shoppers to go with Beelink over the competition, since it's currently the only mini PC maker that uses the design. In the post on X announcing the open-source documentation for the Beelink EX Docking Station, Beelink included a signed document expressly granting anyone permission to use the files, stating that its motivation is continued innovation in the mini PC industry.

We recently reviewed the EX Docking Station along with a Beelink GTI12 Ultra mini PC and found it to be a rather comprehensive, gaming-ready package for those with space-constrained desks. As promised, the PCIe Gen4 x8 slot introduced no performance bottleneck with the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 we tested, making it a viable, affordable alternative to many high-power gaming laptops.
