Apple Mac Studio storage upgrades now available through Studio Drive Kickstarter campaign
Apple is set to unveil new products later this month during a dedicated launch event. Incidentally, one of those arrived earlier today as the iPad mini 7. As it stands, Apple is now expected to present a new iMac and Mac mini, as well as updated MacBook Pro 14 and MacBook Pro 16 laptops (curr. $2,899 on Amazon).
However, it seems that a new generation of Mac Studio could be a while off from becoming official. In the meantime, a French repairs centre has released what appears to be the first third-party storage SSD for Apple's first and second-generation Mac Studios. For context, while the Mac Studio is configurable when ordering, Apple does not sell its proprietary storage drives after the fact.
By contrast, Polysoft Services has managed to reverse engineer a solution called Studio Drive, which is available either as a blank card or with 2 TB and 4 TB capacities up to 8 TB with two cards. Not only does Polysoft claim to be the first to replicate Apple's NAND flash drive, but it also claims to have improved upon Apple's solution by adding overvoltage protection. As it stands, PolySoft is offering its Studio Drive SSDs at the following price points through Kickstarter, with initial deliveries set for January 2025:
- Blank card - $168
- 2 TB - $435
- 4 TB - $871
- 8 TB - $980
