Aya Neo CEO teases "world’s first ultra-thin OLED Windows handheld" console
With the exception of Nintendo’s OLED-based Switch launched in late 2021, all the popular handheld consoles on the market right now come with IPS LCD displays. Despite their superior contrast and motion clarity, OLEDs are usually relegated because of the burn-in issues, so the technology has not really seen much adoption in gaming products. However, with the latest push from companies like LG and Samsung, the OLED technology appears to have matured enough and handheld console makers seem more willing to give it a chance. Aya Neo’s CEO, for instance, recently announced that ithe company will reveal an OLED-based handheld console in May, and this model is supposed to integrate many world-first features as well as entice fans with an affordable price tag.
Besides a superior picture quality, OLEDs also allow for a slimmer and lighter design. Aya Neo is touting this benefit as its main selling point, claiming that the upcoming console will be “the world’s first ultra-thin OLED Windows handheld.” The teaser pictures posted on Weibo suggest that the OLED-based console will be considerably less bulky than the current models that weigh over 700 g. The company has not yet revealed the exact display dimensions and resolution, but, from what we can see in the teaser image with the black silhouettes, the OLED model appears to feature a smaller screen, possibly with a 5.5-inch or 6-inch diagonal.
Apparently, the new OLED model is not supposed to compete with the Aya Neo Next Pro, so the hardware specs are most likely less impressive. The CEO did specify that the OLED console can still run AAA games smoothly, but it will also come with a surprisingly low price, so we should not expect to see Ryzen 6000 APUs with RDNA2 iGPUs for this lineup.
