Coral is a platform developed by Google to support and facilitate on-device AI. Asus has announced that it will use its system-on-module (SOM) on its new AI development kit and single-board computer (SBC). They will be called Tinker Edge T and the CR1S-CM-A respectively.

This year's Computex 2019 has seen a range of new hardware from Asus, as expected. However, the Taiwanese OEM had even more to reveal at this year's conference. It also unveiled a new partnership with Google, by which it will integrate its Coral system into its new AI- or Edge-related products. They are intended to benefit consumer- and business-grade users and applications. The first 2 examples of this new collaboration are an SBC and an AI development kit.

The kit is to be called the Tinker Edge T, and is aimed at electronic creatives and students. It incorporates the Coral SOM, as well as Google's Edge tensor processing unit (TPU) platform. Tinker Edge T also offers 2 MIPI Camera Serial Interface-2 (MIPI CSI-2) connectors. They allow for the development of stereoscopic applications, as well as simple external power sources and straightforward reset buttons. Each development kit will also have 3 programmable LEDs and optional I/O extension module and cables for various peripherals or audio components.

The CR1S-CM-A industrial SBC will also support Coral SOM and Edge TPU. It is intended to provide low-power, high-powered on-device AI for settings such as the kiosks, security systems or signage systems of the future. Therefore, this single board has dual-display support, as well as an on-board M.2 expansion slots and gigabit Ethernet with power-sourcing equipment (PSE). The latter supports power-over-Ethernet for cameras or sensors for business-grade environmental control in real time.

ASUS Announces Partnership with Coral from Google

AI-focused alliance kicks off at Computex 2019 with the launch of ASUS Tinker Edge T
and the CR1S-CM-A industrial SBC featuring Google’s Coral SOM with Edge TPU

KEY POINTS
 New partnership between the ASUS AIoT business unit and Google’s Coral is
focused on developing Edge AI solutions for consumer and business needs
 ASUS Tinker Edge T is an AI development kit featuring the Coral SOM with Edge
TPU for makers and students, enabling creation of AI-powered projects
 The ASUS CR1S-CM-A industrial SBC is an embedded form factor baseboard
with the Coral SOM, perfect for high-performance, low-power AI vertical solutions

TAIPEI, Taiwan, May 24, 2019 — ASUS today announced a partnership between its new AIoT business

unit and Google Coral, the first step in a partnership between the two teams built around creating on-
device AI solutions tailored for consumer and business needs.

Coral is a platform of hardware components, software tools, and content for building devices with local AI.
Coral is designed to make it easier to bring on-device AI application ideas from prototype to production.
The first Coral products are built around Google’s Edge TPU, a small application-specific integrated circuit
(ASIC) that provides high-performance machine learning (ML) inferencing for low-power devices. ASUS
has developed two new products — Tinker Edge T and the CR1S-CM-A industrial single board computer
(SBC) — harnessing the power of the Coral’s SOM with Edge TPU that it will showcase at Computex

2019. Tinker Edge T is an AI development kit designed for makers and students that enables building AI-
powered projects, such as smart-home devices, cameras, game emulators and media servers. The

CR1S-CM-A industrial SBC is an embedded form factor baseboard build around the Coral SOM with
Edge TPU, designed for vertical use to provide AI-powered business intelligence, kiosk, signage and
security solutions.
ASUS and Google are also working together to integrate Coral into additional ASUS products planned to
be announced later in 2019.

Tinker Edge T is an AI development kit built on the Coral platform and is designed for makers and
students, enabling them to build AI-powered projects, such as smart-home devices, cameras, game
emulators and media servers. It features two MIPI Camera Serial Interface 2 (MIPI CSI-2) connectors for
developing stereoscopic applications, convenient external power and reset buttons, and three
programmable LEDs. An optional I/O extension module and cable provide extra audio functionality and
the ability to connect with third-party peripherals.

CR1S-CM-A industrial SBC
The ASUS CR1S-CM-A industrial SBC is an embedded form factor baseboard for the Coral SOM with
Edge TPU designed for vertical use, enabling development of high-performance, low-power AI solutions
for business intelligence, kiosks, signage, security and more. It features dual-display support for console
and signage applications, on-board M.2 expansion slot, gigabit Ethernet with power-sourcing equipment
(PSE) for devices such as power over Ethernet (PoE) IP cameras and multiple digital I/O (DIO)
connectors with isolation for sensing and reacting to real-world events.
