The latest Apple Mac mini 2026 is a super-compact computer that is also quite powerful thanks to the Apple M6 SoC. Beyond productivity workloads, the Apple Mac mini 2026 is well-equipped to handle gaming, including console emulation.

The Apple Mac mini 2026 with the M6 SoC is built for people who want a small-yet-powerful computer for productivity work. In our review of the Apple Mac mini 2026, we gave the compact computer our “Top Rated Award” with a super 88 rating. Part of the reason why the Apple Mac mini 2026 got such a high rating is the impressive Apple M6. The SoC brings insane single-core, excellent multi-core, and solid GPU performance.

YouTuber ETA Prime has now put the Mac mini 2026 to the test to see how the Apple M6 handles console emulation. For the most part, the Apple M6 can handle whatever you can throw at it, including Nintendo GameCube, Sony PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3, and more.

Nintendo GameCube, Sony PSP, and PS2 emulation

Starting with GameCube emulation using the Dolphin emulator, the Apple Mac mini M6 can easily sustain a locked 60 FPS at 8K with a 12X resolution scale in games like Auto Modellista, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, and more. The Dolphin emulator officially supports Apple’s Metal graphics API, allowing the emulator to take full advantage of Apple silicon.

Similarly, ETA Prime also shows that the Apple M6 can easily emulate PSP games with the PPSSPP emulator. The Apple Mac mini 2026 plays games like Tekken 6 and God of War: Chains of Olympus at a locked 60 FPS with a 10x resolution scale. PPSSPP doesn’t support Metal, so the emulator was running under Vulkan.

This limitation doesn’t apply to PCSX2, as the emulator officially supports Metal. This allows ETA Prime to run Gran Turismo 4 and God of War 2 at 60 FPS with 12x and 8x resolution scaling, respectively.

RPCS3 experiences some issues on the Apple M6

Emulating PS3 games with RPCS3 is where the Apple Mac mini 2026 falters a bit. Per ETA Prime, RPCS3 using Vulkan doesn’t play nicely with the Apple M6. Some games the YouTuber tried to play, like Skate 3, apparently refused to run on the Apple Mac mini 2026. While RPCS3 officially supports Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD operating systems, the emulator works best on Linux and Windows. The reason is quite simple: The RPCS3 team doesn’t use macOS and relies solely on independent users to “contribute patches and maintain the quality of the builds”.

So, while many games work perfectly on RPCS3, you will seemingly run into more issues on macOS than Linu/Windows during PS3 emulation.

All in all, the M6-powered Apple Mac mini 2026 appears to be quite a capable gaming machine, even though that is not the device’s main purpose. It is currently retailing for $779 on Amazon with the Apple M6, 256 GB of storage, and 16 GB of unified memory. The highest-end version with the Apple M6, 512 GB of storage, and 24 GB of memory costs $1,149 at the time of writing.
