Anbernic has just released the RG557 globally as its first gaming handheld of 2025. While the company took a fourth-month break between the RG34XX and RG557, there is no expectation it will do the same going forward. For instance, the company recently hinted that the RG557 would be followed by up to 10 new models before the end of the year.
Now, new rumours about the so-called RG34XX SP have emerged online. To recap, there were reports in January that the RG34XX SP would be more than an RG34XX in a Game Boy Advance SP (GBA SP) style shell. At the time, Anbernic was alleged to be considering using the RG34XX SP to showcase a new chipset. Reportedly, this chipset would be positioned between the Rockchip RK3566 and Unisoc Tiger T618 in terms of performance, with the MediaTek Helio P65 touted as a possible candidate.
More recent reports now suggest otherwise, though. Specifically, the Allwinner H700 is expected to return in the RG34XX SP, which Anbernic has used across countless budget retro gaming handhelds in the last year or so. In other words, the RG34XX SP will only perform as well as the RG35XX SP (curr. $79.99 on Amazon), despite suggestions that Powkiddy could soon be returning to the clamshell party with the V90 V2.
As far as we can tell, the main differentiators between the RG34XX SP and RG35XX SP will be the former's size and display. Apparently, the RG34XX SP is closer in size to the original GBA SP than the RG35XX SP. On top of that, the RG34XX SP should be capable of emulating GBA games at an exact 3x integer scaling thanks to a 3.4-inch display running at 720 x 480 pixels. Currently, the RG34XX SP is tipped to arrive next month, with initial teasers likely arriving within the next fortnight or so.
