A slew of third-party games have been announced for the Nintendo Switch 2 including Cyberpunk 2077, Borderlands 4, Hades 2, Hogwarts Legacy, and more. While no Blizzard games made the cut, Rod Fergusson, the head of Diablo at Blizzard says “there’s opportunity” to bring Diablo 4 to the Switch 2. The only component that needs to be figured out is live service on a handheld.
A Gamertag Radio interview with Rod Fergusson, the SVP, GM of all things Diablo at Blizzard, was hosted by Danny Pena and in it, Fergusson spoke about the future of Diablo and the possibility of it running on the Nintendo Switch 2. While no confirmation was given, Fergusson did state that there is an opportunity for sure, and that the Switch 2 definitely has the horsepower to run games like Diablo 4. “It’s nice the Switch 2 has the performance that can run a game like Diablo 4, so yeah, it’s something to look at for sure,” Fergusson shared.
However, the only element that needs to be figured out is the live service. Diablo 4, being a live service game, needs to be connected to the server and with a platform like the Switch 2, people often play while traveling and internet connectivity can be irregular or completely non-existent. “I think the challenge is less around the hardware and just about how we… you know, live services on Switch have been a little bit challenging in the past,” Fergusson explained.
Fergusson is hopeful that things will become clearer and easier for bringing live service to the Switch 2 and thereby launching Diablo 4 on the platform.
Back in January, a leaker claimed that Diablo 4 is already being ported over to the Switch 2, so it is possible that Blizzard has plans in motion. Diablo 3 and Diablo 2 Resurrected are available on the original Switch and with backward compatibility, they will be playable on the Switch 2 as well when it launches on June 5.
