Earlier this week, Retro Game Corps reported that Anbernic had informed it of the launch date and pricing for the company's first retro gaming handheld release of this year. For some reason, the company waited a while before officially confirming as much itself.
Nonetheless, the Anbernic RG557 will be available to order from April 25 at 03:00 PDT (10:00 UTC). As expected, Anbernic has initially priced the RG557 at $234.99 when shipping the device from its Chinese or American warehouses. Alternatively, the handheld will be available in Transparent Purple or White finishes with a 256 GB MicroSD card for $264.99. Please note that Anbernic will increase its prices by $15 to $249.99 and $279.99, respectively, on April 28.
For context, the RG557 replaces the RG556 (curr. $229.99 on Amazon) with a 5.48-inch and 1080p AMOLED display supported by a MediaTek Dimensity 8300 chipset and 12 GB of LPDDR5X RAM. Also, Anbernic has included 256 GB of UFS 4.0 flash storage on which it installs Android 14, as well as a 5,500 mAh battery that offers 27 W wired fast charging. While the RG557 should be powerful enough to emulate up to Wii U games, Wi-Fi 6E connectivity should also make it suitable for game streaming services like Nvidia GeForce Now. Please see Anbernic's website for more details.
