Analogue 3D: Nintendo 64 reimagining now official for $249.99 with 4K region free gameplay
It may have taken over a year, but Analogue has finally revealed more details about its 'reimagining of the N64'. As expected, the Analogue 3D utilises a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) chip to hardware emulate N64 games. For reference, Analogue describes its new console in the following terms:
Analogue 3D represents a milestone in video game preservation: its not only the world's first reimagining of an N64 - but the worlds first 100% compatible recreation of an N64. Analogue spent nearly 4 years engineering it in FPGA. No more incompatibilities found in software emulation like input lag, graphic/audio inaccuracies, timing/frame rate issues and more. For the first time, you can re-experience the N64 exactly as it was meant to be, without compromise.
In real terms, the Analogue 3D should be capable of playing N64 cartridges in 4K over HDMI with region-free compatibility. Additionally, Analogue claims its console is compatible with original accessories and has built-in Expansion Pak support. Moreover, the Analogue 3D boasts CRT and PVM display modes, as well as a variable refresh rate.
For context, all this is possible thanks to Intel's Cyclone 10 GX FPGA chip, which contains 220K logic elements (LEs). Analogue will open Analogue 3D pre-orders on October 21 at 03:00 UTC. As it stands, the console will be available for $249.99 in black and white finishes before shipping. However, we suspect that stock will be limited, as is always the case with Analogue products.
