Amazfit Zepp Health App: Feature-packed, but how does it differ from Garmin?

Amazfit offers more than just a broad lineup of smartwatches. Through Zepp Health, the company has built a comprehensive ecosystem for tracking and analyzing health and fitness metrics. We take a closer look at how the platform holds up in practice. We previously touched on Zepp Health in our review of the Amazfit Cheetah 2 Pro (on Amazon), but the app deserves its own dedicated deep dive. Beyond evaluating its core feature set, our goal is to help current and prospective users better understand how the ecosystem operates.

Whether Zepp Health works for you depends largely on your specific use case. While the platform is feature-rich, it is not without its flaws. One subjective annoyance is the prominent placement of Zepp Aura, Amazfit’s paid subscription service, across the interface. Essential features like the Sleep Health Assessment are locked behind this paywall—and gating health metrics behind an additional fee always leaves a bitter aftertaste. Unlike Garmin, Zepp Health lacks a dedicated web platform. Analyzing large volumes of data or running granular searches on a desktop monitor is not natively supported, which can be frustrating. However, users can work around this limitation to some extent by syncing their data with third-party platforms like Strava.

Data presentation within the mobile app is flexible and highly customizable. The Home tab features distinct layout templates tailored to different user profiles, such as wellness enthusiasts or hybrid athletes. A customizable "Top Indicators" section allows users to tailor both the visual layout and the tracked metrics. Alongside the primary dashboard, the Home tab includes dedicated pages for HybridCharge, Sleep, and Effort. The navigation structure feels slightly convoluted, however, requiring users to jump between bottom navigation tabs and top submenus.

The workout section delivers a clean overview of completed training sessions. Positioned at the very bottom of the screen—and easily missed without scrolling—is the important "More" menu. This is where users can manage Zepp Coach, configure training plans, and view race time predictions for various distances. Overall, workout tracking works well, and the ecosystem now supports equipment management. Automatic exercise recognition for strength training is also supported, though performance remains hit-or-miss. Accuracy depends heavily on the movement: bench presses are recognized fairly reliably, whereas pull-ups frequently trip up the algorithm.

Gamification elements have also expanded. Much like Garmin, Zepp Health now includes badges, awards, and community challenges. The Devices overview serves as a central hub for fine-tuning hardware configurations and installing smartwatch apps. Unlike Garmin—which requires a separate app, Connect IQ, for app management—Zepp Health handles everything in one place. Configuring settings in the app is often far more convenient than tapping through menus on the watch display. Certain features, such as alarms and map management, are tucked away inside the "Device Application Settings" menu, which only appears after scrolling down. It is also worth noting that third-party route imports (e.g., from Komoot) are handled under user settings rather than device settings—a logical setup, but one that feels slightly unintuitive at first.
