Acebeam W20: Pocket-sized LEP flashlight delivers 1,100 metre range

The new Acebeam W20 is remarkably small for a flashlight equipped with laser-excited phosphor (LEP) technology, which enables light sources to project a highly focused beam across long distances. Nevertheless, the W20 also incorporates a reflector to utilise some of the light for illuminating the immediate surroundings. Although wieldy enough for everyday use at just 12 cm (4.72 in) long, it still manages to offer a beam distance of 1,100 m – impressive for such a compact device.
However, the W20 can only sustain this performance for 30 seconds before having to either recharge or step down to an unspecified beam distance. Once brightness is reduced from 600 to 200 lumens, the device will hold this output for another 30 minutes. In Medium mode, it delivers 150 lumens and a range of 575 m for 32 minutes before throttling. In Low mode, brightness is maintained at a constant 50 lumens for the entire battery runtime (approximately 80 minutes), providing a range of 354 m.
Charging the flashlight requires removing the 16340 battery, as the USB-C port is located on the cell itself. The device can also run on a disposable CR123 battery.
Brightness levels are selected using a magnetic control ring at the front, whilst the on/off switch sits at the back. A two-way clip allows the flashlight to attach to items such as hats. Weighing roughly 130 g (4.6 oz), the W20 is rated IP68 and built to withstand tough conditions.
The Acebeam W20 is available now for $189 through the official website.
