AMD confirms Fluid Motion Frames 2.1 in the works to challenge Nvidia Smooth Motion: Better image quality, no new hardware requirements

Recent reports indicate that AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2.1 (AFMF 2.1) is in development. The updated frame generation tech is aimed at improving the quality of generated frames and will be available for older hardware as well as the RX 9070 series GPUs.

The latest in AMD and Nvidia's recent war for AI gaming supremacy sees AMD confirm that Fluid Motion Frames 2.1 is in development. The only confirmed detail about AFMF 2.1 is that it will target improved quality over AFMF 2.0, which was introduced in October last year.

According to VideoCardz, AMD will soon launch AFMF 2.1 in an update to its HYPR-RX software stack within the AMD Software: Adrenaline Edition driver package. AFMF 2.0 was a significant update, although it was later surpassed again by Nvidia's Smooth Motion, as gamers often complained of artefacts and image quality with Fluid Motion Frames.

It also looks as though AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2.1 won't have any new hardware requirements, which should make it a viable option for increasing motion smoothness on previous-generation AMD Ryzen processors, like those in gaming handhelds like the Asus ROG Ally X (curr. $799.99 at Best Buy)

The driver-level frame-generation tech serves as an alternative to technology like AMD FSR 3 and Nvidia's DLSS tech, both of which require specific AI hardware and game-specific implementations. AFMF, on the other hand, can help smooth motion, even when the game has long since been abandoned by its developers, as long as it runs on Vulkan, DirectX 11 or 12, or OpenGL.

AMD has not yet announced when the updated FMF 2.1 will launch, but it will likely arrive around the launch of the AMD Radeon RX 9070 series GPUs
