Motorola, Samsung, or Xiaomi? The battle for the mid-range segment rages every year, and based purely on sales figures, the Samsung Galaxy A57 is likely the winner again this year.
But Motorola isn’t about to give up without a fight and is launching numerous phones in its Edge 70 series as part of a major model offensive.
Among them is the Motorola Edge 70 Plus, which we tested recently. At a price of around US$ 670, it’s encroaching squarely on the territory of Samsung’s mid-ranger.
Samsung leads overall, but...
When it comes to the overall score, the result is clear: The Samsung Galaxy A57 wins by a significant margin, scoring 81.5% compared with 77.8% for the Motorola phone.
But Samsung shouldn’t get too comfortable, as Motorola’s challenger clearly has the edge in several respects, such as battery life: The Motorola Edge 70 Plus lasts an impressive 23:42 hours in our Wi-Fi test, while Samsung has to make do with just under 15 hours. That’s over 8:30 hours less, or a whole working day.
Motorola has the edge when it comes to the screen
Motorola’s AMOLED display is also superior to Samsung’s in many respects: Its colors are a little more accurate, its resolution is higher, and Samsung’s mid-range champion can’t match its maximum brightness either.
The Edge 70 Plus also has a few weaknesses
But where does the big gap in the scores come from? Samsung simply uses a significantly more powerful processor and offers considerably more graphics performance than Motorola.
Samsung also comes out clearly ahead in terms of its Wi-Fi modem and camera system: The Samsung Galaxy A57 can deliver Wi-Fi speeds twice as fast, and it has an ultra-wide-angle camera, whereas the Motorola Edge 70 Plus has to make do with a main camera and a very low-resolution macro camera on the back.
Ultimately, though, every buyer has to decide for themselves what matters most and whether the Motorola phone might ultimately make more sense for their personal circumstances.
