Motorola phone display is brighter than most competitors'—but there's a problem

A bright display is a great feature on a smartphone: The Motorola Edge 70 Pro actually comes with a fantastic AMOLED display in our review—but there’s also an issue that buyers should be aware of.

The 6.78-inch AMOLED panel on the Edge 70 Pro reaches up to 3,326 cd/m² in lab tests and impresses with excellent color reproduction at a Delta E of 0.88. However, the screen uses PWM to flicker at only 144 Hz—a potential issue for sensitive users.

Brightness levels well above the class average

Laboratory measurements confirm that the panel has a center brightness of 1,684 cd/m²—the predecessor, the Edge 60 Pro, reached only 1,099 cd/m², falling short by 35 percent. In the APL18 peak test as well, with 3,326 cd/m², the Edge 70 Pro outperforms most comparable phones. Anyone reading news or navigating maps outdoors on summer days will noticeably benefit from the high brightness.

Reference-Level Color Accuracy

A Delta E value of 0.88 on the ColorChecker means that color deviations remain virtually invisible, even for demanding photo displays. By comparison: The Samsung Galaxy S26+ achieves 1.2, while its predecessor achieves 1.25. When editing product photos on the go, the display thus renders colors nearly identical to those of a calibrated studio monitor.

PWM Flicker as a Measurable Weakness

The OLED screen is dimmed via pulse-width modulation at 144 Hz. This frequency is significantly lower than values such as 715.7 Hz on the Motorola Edge 60 Pro or 360 Hz on the Vivo X300. People who are sensitive to this and experience headaches after extended screen reading sessions in the evening should therefore test the device thoroughly before purchasing it.

Fast Response Thanks to 1-ms Switching Times

The response time measurement shows 1 ms for black-to-white transitions—a value that makes rapid image changes while scrolling or in games appear smooth. When scrolling through long lists or swiping between apps, the panel feels pleasantly responsive and lag-free.

The display of the Motorola Edge 70 Pro sets new standards in its price range with peak brightness and excellent color accuracy. However, the low PWM frequency of 144 Hz remains a noticeable compromise that can make everyday use difficult for sensitive users.
