This mid-range Motorola smartphone is one of the biggest competitors to... Motorola!?

Motorola's Edge 70 series includes at least 5 models—so far. The manufacturer wants to cover the upper end of the mid-range market, but is there really enough room for so many devices? The series' latest model, the Edge 70 Plus, raises this question anew.

How many models do you need, and when is it too many? Motorola has to ask itself this question too, since depending on how you count, there are already four or five models in the upper mid-range and flagship segments (the Edge 70 Fusion, for example, comes in variants with either a 5,200-mAh or 7,000-mAh battery).

Now a fifth (or even sixth) model is being added, and what can the Edge 70 Plus (priced at around US$ 650) still offer that we don't already know from the other devices?

Motorola tries different things within the series

Motorola is really trying to give each device its own identity while also distinguishing it from the Signature above the series and the Moto G87 below it: While the Edge 70 Max (our review will be available soon) stands out with its huge battery and plenty of processing power, the Edge 70 Pro and the Edge 70 showcase their particularly slim and lightweight chassis.

The Edge 70 Fusion is exceptionally customizable thanks to its numerous colors and different battery options, and it is also not quite as expensive.

Rounded edges set it apart

In terms of design, the Motorola Edge 70 Plus takes its cues from the Edge 70 Pro. The two models stand out from the otherwise rather angular Edge 70 series with their rounded displays and backs. We like the build quality, although the phone makes an audible creaking sound when pressed firmly. And it offers no real protection against water when being submerged.

The Edge 70 Plus offers very good battery life and a very bright display, but its performance is rather limited, and its camera system also feels stripped down, with just one high-resolution camera on the back and a 2-megapixel macro camera.

The smartphone also has a few special features

It offers a microSD card reader, which by no means all devices in this price range still include.

The touchscreen and fingerprint sensor are very reliable and fast, and the update promise sounds good at first: updates through 2031 may not be a record, but it's respectable. However, Motorola only promises that updates will be available until then, not that they will be up to date...

The detailed review of the Edge 70 Plus reveals even more about the latest addition to the Edge 70 series.
