Some gamers suspect that Nintendo is using generative AI in the Zelda Notes companion app. The narration sounds robotic, while the Spanish voice actress playing Princess Zelda is unrecognizable. Zelda Notes assists players during the Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild Switch 2 games.

The use of generative AI in video games has become a contentious debate. Some observers recently accused Nintendo of using AI-produced billboards in Mario Kart World. The company denied the claims and has otherwise stayed clear of similar controversy. However, now there are suspicions over some odd-sounding Spanish Zelda dialogue. Gamers encounter the voiceovers in the Zelda Notes app, a companion for two upgraded Switch 2 games.

Zelda Notes enhances the Switch 2 Editions of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild. In the app, gamers benefit from navigational aid and commentary about significant locations. Other features include the sharing of Tears of the Kingdom ultrahand builds. Nintendo also recorded dialogue for key characters like Princess Zelda. When the gaming giant shared dialogue on social media, Spanish gamers immediately expressed concern.

The narrator guiding players seems robotic and is possibly a product of generative AI. Still, it's the Princess Zelda voice that many gamers are focusing on. Spanish-language players in Europe were expecting to hear Nerea Alfonso, who took on the role in Breath of the Wild. Instead, some listeners think Nintendo used AI for the part, or at least, it's a lesser-known performer. So far, Alfonso hasn't clarified whether she is participating in Zelda Notes.

As opinions continue to flood in, more Zelda fans conclude that Nintendo opted for another actress. Nintendo hasn't yet embraced generative AI, unlike other publishers and developers. Designer and producer Shigeru Miyamoto thinks the technology doesn't reflect the spirit of the company. Miyamoto also believes that AI can introduce issues related to intellectual property rights.

Players can soon decide for themselves if they approve of the Zelda Notes narration. The Switch 2 versions of Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild and last-gen upgrade packs will debut on June 5th.
