HP's ZBook 8 workstation laptop line-up is a new crop of powerhouses that promise solid CPU performance and impressive display options. There is also a healthy selection of ports, which is to be expected from a workstation laptop.
HP ZBook 8 14 specs and highlights
The HP ZBook 8 14 will be available with both Intel and AMD CPUs, including the AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 230, AMD Ryzen AI 7 PRO 350, and AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX PRO 370 — these are essentially rebadged AMD Hawk, Krackan, and Strix Point APUs with six, eight, and 12 CPU cores. Intel CPU options include the Intel Core Ultra 9 285H, Core Ultra 7 265H, 265U, 255H, and 255U, Core Ultra 5 235H, 225U, 235U, and 225H SKUs. While this provides buyers plenty of choice when it comes to configuring CPU horsepower, it might be a little confusing for those who are not as tech-savvy. RAM is limited to 64 GB of DDR5-5600 in dual-channel with ECC functionality.
The display options range from a 1920 × 1080-pixel unit with 300 nits of brightness and a mere 62.5% coverage of the sRGB colour space to a much more premium display with a 2560 × 1600-pixel resolution, 500 nits of rated brightness, and a 120 Hz refresh rate. HP will also offer a 1080p touch panel and a 1080p display option with HP Sure View privacy and Low Blue Light tech.
When it comes to ports, all versions of the HP ZBook 8 will feature 1× HDMI 2.1, 2× Thunderbolt 4 ports (with DP2.1 and USB PD), 1× RJ-45 port, 1× USB type-A 5 Gbps port, and a 3.5 mm audio combo jack. The HP ZBook 8 14 laptops will be available with up to 2 TB of PCIe Gen4 ×4 TLC SSD storage. HP has not revealed any future 14-inch AMD models with dedicated graphics, but the Intel versions will be available with an Nvidia RTX 500 Ada laptop GPU with 4 GB of GDDR6 VRAM, which should be enough for basic graphics acceleration in production and design workflows.
The ZBook 8 14 packs a 62 Wh battery, and it isn't particularly light, weighing in at a minimum of 1.44 kg (3.18 lbs). The chassis also measures in at 1.89 cm (0.74 in.)
HP ZBook 8 16 specs and features
Aside from the increased screen size, the HP ZBook 16 is basically identical to its 14-inch counterparts, except the ZBook 16 will not be offered with an option for AMD Ryzen CPUs, limiting the ZBook 16 to the Intel Core Ultra 9, Core Ultra 7, and Core Ultra 5 CPUs mentioned above.
Both the ZBook 8 14 and ZBook 8 16 workstation laptops feature spill-resistant full-size keyboards with LED backlighting for late night working sessions. Login duties are handled by a fingerprint scanner or optional IR functionality built into the 5 MP webcam. The ZBook 16 is available with either a 62 Wh battery or a 77 Wh battery, and the laptop starts at a weight of 1.72 kg (3.79 lbs). HP claims the 140 W fast charger can deliver up to 50% battery capacity in 30 minutes. The ZBook 8 16 is also somewhat thicker than the ZBook 8 14, coming in at 1.92 cm (0.76 in.).
