Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga G2 AMD Laptop in review: Ryzen Pro unleashed inside a ThinkPad convertible
The second generation of the ThinkPad Yoga L13 offers significantly faster performance compared to its predecessor thanks to Intel Tiger Lake and AMD Ryzen Pro 5000 CPUs, respectively, while maintaining its familiar appearance. The brushed aluminum lid makes for a solid impression, which the traditional ThinkPad keyboard with comfortable travel and the TrackPoint with three dedicated buttons complement well. However, Lenovo has not yet made the switch to a 16:10 or 3:2 panel with a better work space distribution.
The L series in general and specifically the AMD CPU variant stands out in the business class with a relatively low price. Our configuration, which comes with a R5 5650U Pro, a 13.3-inch touchscreen, a ThinkPad Pen Pro, and no operating system costs 900 Euros (~994 USD). Since the case, speakers and input devices remain unchanged, the comments from our in-depth review still apply:
We also already reviewed a second-generation model with the Intel Core i5-1135G7:

Case - Familiar ThinkPad Exterior
As with the predecessor, the lid consists of brushed aluminum and makes a solid imipression, although it is a fingerprint magnet. It is very resistant to twisting. The hinges, which are often the weak spot of a convertible, are fixed with four screws each. It is not possiible to open the device with one hand, which is further proof of the firmness of the hinges.
Connectivity - Lenovo Business Notebook with Wide Variety but no Smart Card Reader
The number and selection of ports are both good. With a compatible dock, users have access to a lot more connectivity. Alternatively, the integrated USB-C port, which can reach speeds of up to 10 Gbps and supports DisplayPort, can be used as such. Meanwhile, a smart card reader has been omitted on the entry-level business model.

Communication
The weaker Wi-Fi module represents a significant drawback compared to the Intel version. Relative to other devices with the same module, our test device's Wi-Fi performance is subpar. Even if it was not, a Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga L13 Tiger Lake would still be almost twice as fast.
That being said, almost 600 Mbps should be sufficient for all applications up to large file transfers. Regardless, the Yoga L13 AMD falls behind its direct competitors in the business category.
Webcam
Display - Yoga L13 Touchscreen with Solid Results
Even though the panel type is identical to the predecessor, the more recent model performs worse in every aspect aside from the sRGB color space coverage. The average brightness and the contrast - due to the poor black value - fall outside of the expected serial production variances.
Despite some characteristics taking a hit of significantly more than 10 %, the display can be described as entirely average. The maximum brightness is sufficient even for occasional outdoor use. The color accuracy is suitable for photo editing, provided there is no professional standard to adhere to.
Full HD resolution results in detailed images on the 13.3-inch display. With 290 nits, the measured average brightness falls only slightly below the manufacturer's specified 300 nits and the deviation is not visible to the naked eye. The contrast ratio is decent. Similarly to the panels we tested previously, we detected the presence of PWM flickering. At brightness levels below 50 %, we measured a frequency of 25 kHz, which should not cause any issues. Notably, there is barely any backlight bleeding. While this effect varies from unit to unit, all three of the panels we tested showed similarly good results.

* ... smaller is better
The color accuracy, which we tested using the X-Rite i1Pro spectrophotometer, roughly matches the predecessor's. The Yoga L13 G2 almost covers the entire sRGB color space. While the first-generation panel was actually able to fully cover the sRGB color space, however, our test model cannot quite reach 100 %. Since the display will most likely not be used for professional photo editing or designer software, neither this small deficit nor the 67 % AdobeRGB color space coverage are a major issue. Despite falling behiind its competition, multimedia tasks are no challenge for our test device.
Our CalMAN analysis shows an excellent color accuracy ex-factory. The deltaE deviation is significantly lower than 3. Deviations below this threshold are no longer visible to the naked eye. We were able to further reduce the deltaE deviation from 2 to 1 after calibrating the display. Our profile is available for download near the box containing the screen's measured values. The appropriate color space coverage and great color accuracy make for a solid foundation for video and photo editing.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)
Screen flickering / PWM detected | 25000 Hz | ≤ 50 % brightness setting | |
The display backlight flickers at 25000 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 50 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 25000 Hz is quite high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 17900 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured. |
There are drawbacks with regards to outdoor use. Since touchscreens traditionally come with a glossy surface, the color representation suffers in bright environments. As the picture shows, text remains discernible even under direct sunlight. Serious outdoor use on a sunny day is out of the question or at least very straining on the eyes. As expected, the IPS panel's colors and contrast do not deteriorate when viewed from the side.
Performance - AMD Ryzen Pro of the Convertible Hits the Gas
Aside from an Intel Tiger Lake processor variant, the business convertible also comes in a configuration with the 5th generation AMD Ryzen Pro, which is the case for our test device. The latter manages even more complex workloads and demanding calculations. Office tasks are no real challenge, either. With 16 GB of RAM, the convertible is well-prepared for long-term use. Since the RAM is soldered and not expandable, we do not recommend the 8-GB model.
Processor - AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 5650U
The Ryzen 5 Pro 5650U from AMD offers six cores and twelve threads. Lenovo allows for a short CPU boost consumption of up to 30 W. Subsequently, the CPU is able to maintain a consumption of 25 W for almost an entire minute. The design of the processor is only meant to handle the thermal energy of about a 15-W TDP. This value matches the long-term power draw in our stress tests. In order to maintain this level, the single fan has to work hard to dissipate the heat - more on this in the "emissions" paragraph.
Our Cinebench R15 loop test shows the temporary performance potential of the CPU. During the first (and slightly less so the second loop), the results are significantly better compared to the similar Lenovo ThinkPad L13 with an identical processor. Subsequently, they converge. At the same time, the lead compared to the i5-1135G7 is considerable. While the AMD solution only performs marginally better in a single-thread benchmark, the all-core Cinebench results are between 20 % and 50 % faster than those of the available Intel CPUs - including i5 and i7. This puts the AMD Ryzen 5 Pro at least one level above its competition.

System Performance
The system's suitability for day-to-day tasks and up to workloads including professional software is beyond reproach. The good PCMark results reflect the processor's good performance characteristics. Here, the Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga G2 AMD once again leaves its Intel-based counterparts behind. Media processing is the only category where things are more even. Quick workflows, fast application startup times and multi tasking are all possible without any hiccups.

Storage Solution
The installed SSD offers solid performance. Compared to the convertible class averages, it comes out slightly ahead in almost all subcategories. Although 512 GB should be enough in most cases, the standard length of 80 mm and the M.2 interface allow for a simple and inexpensive replacement. After installing an operating system and a few essential programs, about 450 GB is available to the user.

GPU Performance
The integrated AMD Radeon RX Vega 7 is responsible for all graphically demanding tasks. As per usual, it shares its power budget and thermal constraints with the CPU. Due to this, our expectations are low. The results put the ThinkPad Yoga L13 AMD on par with the L13 with the Intel i5-1135G7 and its Iris Xe graphics.
There is a notable improvement compared to the first-generation of the Yoga L13. Comparatively, some the 3DMark benchmark scores more than doubled.

Gaming Performance
Due to the limited space inside a convertible and the 13.3-inch form factor, the graphics performance is acceptable at best. On low settings, even the odd demanding game can still be playable.
The graphics performance stabilizes at a low level after a very short period of time. When the power draw is limited due to thermal constraints after - at best - one minute, the performance drops by close to 20 %, as our Witcher 3 FPS chart shows. That being said, the performance remains stable afterwards, albeit in conjunction with high fan speeds.

Emissions - Silent During Normal Use
System Noise
The ThinkPad can be completely silent for the most part. The energy saver mode is particularly beneficial in this regard. When the active cooling solution engages, the noise it produces is somewhat reminiscent of a whining kitten. Subsequently, a powerful blowing noise enters the picture. It remains constant and subdued. We did not observe fan pulsing or other disturbing noises.

Temperature
Similar to the system noise, the heat development during daily use remains moderate. Even under load, we measured a peak hot spot temperature of only 40 °C. This is partially due to the SoC, which never exceeds 80 °C. Individual sensor readings only sporadically reach higher values. As a result, the case of the ThinkPad remains cool even when the system is under prolonged stress. There is a noticeable wam spot near the "S" and "W" keys.
Overall, the system appears to be suitable for use on the legs, particularly in tablet mode.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 34.7 °C / 94 F, compared to the average of 35.3 °C / 96 F, ranging from 19.6 to 55.7 °C for the class Convertible.
(+) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 39.1 °C / 102 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 23.7 °C / 75 F, compared to the device average of 30.2 °C / 86 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 24.3 °C / 75.7 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(+) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 28.1 °C / 82.6 F (+3.8 °C / 6.9 F).

Speakers
When used as a laptop, the two small speakers are pointed towards the bottom. When set down on a desk, the sound warrants no criticism. Naturally, there is no bass whatsoever, but voices, mids, and treble are all reproduced clearly. After transforming the Yoga L13 into tablet mode, a significant difference becomes noticeable. The speakers are then pointed directly towards the user. This results in a significantly better sound experience. Thus, the tablet mode of the Yoga L13 is recommended for media consumption.
Alternatively, external speakers or headphones can be connected primarily via the headset jack on the left or Bluetooth. Unfortunately, there are no physical volume buttons. When the keyboard and its function keys are hard to reach, as is the case in tablet mode, trying to control the system's volume level can become tedious.

Energy Management - Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga Is Economical
Energy Consumption
Surprisingly, the energy consumption under load is low. Since the AMD Ryzen 5 Pro only consumes 30 W even under maximium stress, the system's total power draw is only marginally higher. Thus, the included 65-W power supply almost seems excessive. Still, it comes standard with the Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga L13.
By contrast, the power draw while idling appears somewhat high. Here, the convertible demands almost 5 W without being tasked with anything.

Battery Life
In our real-world Wi-Fi test, our test device's 46-Wh battery lasts for almost 8 hours at a display brightness of close to 75 %. During video playback in airplane mode, the battery lasts for one hour longer. This represents a good result considering the battery capacity is average at best. The system runs efficiently, which is particularly apparent from the fact that the video test runs for an additional 140 minutes compared to the predecessor ThinkPad Yoga L13 with an i5-10210U and the same battery capacity.

Verdict - Yoga L13 AMD with Impressive Performance and Extensive Features
Compared to the first generation, the Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga L13 AMD G2 has a significant advantage in terms of the system performance thanks to its powerful processor. Meanwhile, the battery life has been improved - particularly during video playback. We also did not observe excessively high surface temperatures similar to those of the predecessor. When it comes to to multii-thread computing, Intel Tiger Lake stands no chance against the AMD Ryzen 5 Pro, even though it is competitive otherwise.
There is a notable absence of any real weaknesses - aside from the maximum brightness of the display, which could have been slightly higher. The chassis of the L13 Yoga makes a robust impression and the input devices offer comfortable haptics. Furthermore, Lenovo has included a sensible port selection, which can be easily expanded via the docking connector. The lack of a SmartCard reader on the Campus model should be a non-issue for most users. While the convertible does not particularly stand out in any aspect, this is acceptable considering the price.
The flexibility of the laptop and tablet modes appear to be well designed. The user experience is good in both cases. When used as a workhorse, the L13 Yoga shines with great performance as well as a great keyboard and clickpad. After transforming into tablet mode, the speakers sound better, there is a camera that produces decent pictures, while the ThinkPad Pen Pro allows for precise inputs. The only annoyance in tablet mode is the lack of volume buttons.
The AMD processor inside the ThinkPad Yoga L13 Gen2 performs very well during day-to-day use. On top of that, all input devices offer a good user experience. The business convertible effortlessly meets our expectations and comes with all of the most important features.
Compared to its direct competition such as the convertibles Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga L13 Intel Tiger Lake or the Samsung Galaxy Book 360 15 with an i5-1135G7, the AMD Ryzen Pro offers significantly faster performance. This results in an excellent PCMark10 score, suggesting great real-world performance. By contrast, the integrated graphics unit is not quite that fast, although this will be of lesser importance for most users. The slow Wi-Fi module and the lack of a Thunderbolt 4 port represent more noticeable drawbacks. Additionally, the Galaxy Book has a far better display.
Price and Availability
While the AMD model is not yet widely available for purchase, we expect it to become available within the coming weeks in Lenovo's online shop and several major retailers starting at just under $1000. Alternatively, various configurations of the Intel version (which comes with Thunderbolt 4) can be purchased from Lenovo's online shop, Amazon.com or Best Buy.
