As usual, Apple's tech specs are silent on the exact capacity of the new iPhones' batteries, but the EU energy labels in the Apple Online Store now reveal exactly how large the batteries are. The battery of the iPhone 17 has grown only minimally by 3.7% compared to the iPhone 16, while the iPhone 17 Pro has an 18.7% larger battery, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max has an 8.6% higher capacity.
This makes the iPhone 17 Pro Apple's first smartphone with a battery capacity exceeding 5,000 mAh, putting it just below the 20 Wh limit above which a battery would have to be transported as hazardous goods in Germany, Austria, and the USA, which would significantly increase logistics costs.
The iPhone Air's battery, on the other hand, is 32.6% smaller than the iPhone 16 Plus's battery at 3,149 mAh, but the iPhone Air's case is also 2.16 millimeters or 27.6% thinner at 5.64 millimeters. To compensate for the small battery, Apple offers iPhone Air buyers a $99 power bank that attaches magnetically to the back of the smartphone and extends battery life by up to 65%.
The four models in the iPhone 17 series have the following battery capacities:
- Apple iPhone 17: 3,692 mAh (+3.7% vs. iPhone 16)
- Apple iPhone Air: 3,149 mAh (-32.6% vs. iPhone 16 Plus)
- Apple iPhone 17 Pro: 4,252 mAh (+18.7% vs. iPhone 16 Pro)
- Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max: 5,088 mAh (+8.6% vs. iPhone 16 Pro Max)
