The Nintendo Switch may be the console for the Covid-19 era; however, a start-up has decided that it also needs the edge conferred by the nostalgia for retro arcade gaming. To this end, it has created the Switch Fighter, a dock-like device that turns the tablet into a portable version of the same when slotted into it.

The Nintendo Switch is a smash-hit thanks to 2020's ongoing wide-spread, public health-mandated lockdown situations. Many companies have arisen to offer accessories that offer an alternative to the Joy-Con as a way of playing with these consoles. A recent example of these is the Switch Fighter, which has been designed to replace them with arcade controls.

This take on the Switch dock is indeed intended to convert the tablet part of this device into an arcade - albeit a miniature one the user might even carry around with them. Its appropriately retro interface - a joystick and 6 buttons - interact wirelessly with the slate, (hopefully, this does not unduly affect latency) which is provided with a made-to-measure slot to complete the effect.

Alternatively, the Switch can be placed less precisely within this new product in portrait mode when the user wants to use the controls for arcade-style shooters. The dock's maker claims these inputs are made by the brand Sanwa, a well-known name among 'real' arcade-makers. On that note, there is also a Switch Fighter Lite, which will have "high-quality classic" joystick and buttons, albeit not ones carrying an apparent household name in their terms.

This Lite version will also lack the ability to output to a TV via HDMI slated for the 'main' variant. The new Switch Fighter has been launched via Indiegogo, where it has attained about 26% of its 932,000 Hong Kong dollar ($ HKD, or ~US$120,250) goal. It starts at $854 HKD (~$110) for a standard model, or $535 HKD (~$70) for a Lite variant, at its current Early Bird level (correct at time of writing).
