Xiaomi's parallel charging technology could let you charge your smartphone battery at up to 200W
Over the past year, we've heard multiple rumours about Xiaomi working on 200W fast charging capabilities for its smartphone batteries. However, Xiaomi still hasn't breached the 120W barrier, and if recent launches are anything to go by, it doesn't seem to be in any hurry. However, a new leak from Weibo veteran Digital Chat Station suggests that the company could hit those speeds soon-ish.
The Weibo post in question states that Xiaomi is researching parallel charging technology, which lets you supply power to two batteries simultaneously. However, this is only possible in a dual-cell configuration. This shouldn't be much of a bother for Xiaomi, as many of its batteries are already dual-cell. The process is quite complicated, as it requires the battery controller to balance the voltage and current between all circuits constantly. On paper, parallel charging can potentially double the charging speed, so it 200W is well within the realm of possibilities.
Therefore, it could be months, if not years, before Xiaomi makes this technology mainstream. 120W of power is already a bit overkill for most modern-day smartphone batteries, so there's no reason for Xiaomi to rush. Perhaps the company could have it ready in time for the Mi 12 series, which is expected to run Samsung's first-ever 200MP camera sensor. It'll look pretty alongside 200W fast charging capabilities, if nothing else.
