120 watts (W) is the highest rate at which a smartphone can charge in 2021. The latest word is that there are 2 devices in development capable of breaking this barrier that will launch the following year. They could thus go from 0 to 100% in 10 minutes or less thanks to their alleged upgrade.

A small handful of brands, most notably Xiaomi, Honor and iQOO, have produced 2021 smartphones that can charge at 100W or more. However, the former has demonstrated that it is possible to cut that rate in half, with the latest type of HyperCharge power brick, portrayed as working with a modified Mi 11-series unit in an earlier demonstration.

The OEM thus hinted that the technology might be ready to succeed its current top-end 120W standard in the next generation of its flagships. Now, the well-regarded tipster Digital Chat Station has fueled this rumor by asserting that 2 premium smartphones will be capable of charging even faster in 2022.

Interestingly, the leaker did not mention brand names, thus implying that an OEM besides Xiaomi has also leveled up in terms of their charging game. iQOO, a performance-focused subsidiary of Vivo, is an obvious candidate, although Motorola (a company also linked to the more state-of-the-art trick of remote wireless charging) is also an outside possibility in this case, as is Honor.

On the other hand, both of these devices could simply be released by Xiaomi. As it has now allowed its 120W spec to trickle down to the new Redmi Note 11 series, this is indeed probable. Meanwhile, Digital Chat Station has also mentioned that next-gen charging advancements might have stopped at faster wired speeds. Therefore, its two putative 2022 top-end smartphones might debut with wireless charging that might reach 80W at best.
