iPhones are particularly popular in the US, often followed by devices of Samsung's Galaxy line-up. Now, the market analysis group Counterpoint Research has found that things in this market are little different in 3Q2021. On the other hand, a certain event has resulted in some shake-ups in the space.
LG's exit from the smartphone market has left room for other brands to grow; most notably OnePlus, which has grown its share of the US market to just over 0% in 3Q2020 to 3% in 3Q2021. This gives it a place of #5 in the rankings of individual brands for the latest complete quarter.
Counterpoint now expects its reach to grow further in subsequent quarters, now that it has secured an agreement to sell devices such as the Nord N200 through Walmart's pay-as-you-go carrier Metro.
Motorola is now also said to have benefitted from LG's departure: its share has gone up by 1% year-on-year (YoY) to help it retain its third place behind Samsung (with a growth of 5% YoY).
Meanwhile, TCL (whose sales in the US are augmented by the uptake of budget units from its subsidiary Alcatel) saw its share dropped by 1% YoY, although it managed to hang on to its 4th place overall.
