With lossless NearLink Audio: Huawei unveils new FreeBuds Pro 5 earbuds with launch timeline also outlined
Huawei has officially announced its next-generation pair of wireless earbuds, roughly two months after the company presented the FreeBuds 7i. Arriving in the wake of the Mate 70 Air, the FreeBuds Pro 5 is not available to purchase just yet. However, the company has opened reservations in China ahead of a full launch later this month.
In the meantime, Huawei has already outlined a few details about it alternatives to Apple's popular AirPods Pro 3 (curr. $249 on Amazon). For example, the FreeBuds Pro 5 will be the first pair of wireless earbuds to support NearLink Audio technology, which Huawei has previously claimed will pioneer a 'new era of lossless audio'.
In practical terms, NearLink Audio should provide the FreeBuds Pro 5 with up to a 12 Mbps transmission rate and support for the L2HC audio codec. Moreover, NearLink Audio is said to reduce power consumption by up to 40% compared with 'traditional solutions'. Unfortunately, Huawei has not elaborated further yet.
Nonetheless, it seems that the FreeBuds Pro 5 should outlast the existing FreeBuds Pro 4, which tops out at 33 hours between charges with its charging case factored in. Visually, the FreeBuds Pro 5 looks slightly smaller than its predecessor but with repositioned noise-cancelling microphones.
