Microsoft's KB5101684 preview update brings File Explorer unit fixes, Windows Hello external fingerprint support, and Voice Isolation.

Microsoft is rolling out KB5101684, the optional preview cumulative update for Windows 11 version 25H2 and version 24H2. The update advances both branches to OS Builds 26200.8973 and 26100.8973, respectively.

As a preview update, KB5101684 will not install automatically. Users can find it under Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates, where it appears as an available download and install option.

File Explorer gets clearer file sizes

File Explorer's Details view now displays file sizes using appropriate units (KB, MB, or GB) instead of forcing everything into kilobytes. Middle-clicking a folder in the address bar or on the Home page now opens it directly in a new tab, a change Microsoft says improves the consistency of tabbed navigation.

Search, Start menu, and taskbar fixes

Windows Search now handles typos and partial app names more effectively when locating installed apps, and Settings results are prioritized higher in relevant searches. The Start menu retains selected view preferences more reliably, and taskbar notification badges now use the system accent color instead of defaulting to red.

Windows Hello adds external fingerprint reader support

Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security (ESS) now extends to peripheral fingerprint sensors, meaning desktops and other Windows 11 PCs, including Copilot+ PCs, can use plug-in fingerprint readers for secure sign-in rather than requiring built-in hardware. Microsoft first disclosed this feature in January 2026 via KB5074105 and says it is now rolling out.

Touchpad and Voice Access updates

New precision touchpad controls under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad let users adjust scroll and zoom speed and enable accelerated scrolling. Voice Access gains a new Voice Isolation option that filters out background noise and other speakers, alongside newly added Korean language support.

Microsoft also bundled a servicing stack update (KB5101711) alongside the cumulative update and confirmed it is not currently aware of any known issues with this release.
