Microsoft is responding to the criticism and is fundamentally overhauling the search feature in Windows 11. In the latest Windows Insider preview version, the search box no longer displays ads, and is designed to find local search results, such as settings, apps, and files, much more reliably, rather than falling back on a web search.

The search box on the Windows 11 taskbar is receiving its most extensive update to date in the latest Windows Insider preview release. The feature is being rolled out gradually to beta testers in the experimental update channel, but as part of the controlled feature rollout, not all users will have immediate access to the redesigned search box.

Microsoft has not yet specified when the improved search box will be rolled out to all Windows 11 users as part of a stable Windows update. When you click on the search box, you currently see two columns, one column with previous search queries and a larger column filled with ads for Microsoft services and apps. In the new version, these ads are completely removed. The space freed up by this change allows Microsoft to display more details about past searches.

Search results are highlighted more clearly, making it easier to tell whether an app, a file, system settings, or a website is being opened. Microsoft is also introducing a large preview for supported file types and making it easier to use "Open with" directly in search.

Local search results take priority in the new version. For example, if you search for "Outlook" with a typo or for a system setting, Windows 11 Search no longer falls back to a web search as often. This is intended to display more relevant search results in many cases.

When a web search is performed, Microsoft no longer wastes space on ads. Instead of having to scroll first, the web search results now appear at the top.
