The Volkswagen Golf series has been augmented with two new variants, both of which are plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). Both new cars are equipped with second-gen powertrains rated for the equivalent of up to 272 horsepower (in the GTE) and fast DC charging. The GTE and eHybrid also come with Discover Media navigation and Digital Cockpit Pro infotainment features as standard, although features such as Lane Assist are optional extras.

Volkswagen has announced that the Golf has gone PHEV in its latest 2 iterations. The new GTE and eHybrid variants are also rated for the marque's latest and fastest charging rates, going up to 11 kilowatts (kW) over AC and as much as 50kW over DC.

The Golf eHybrid and GTE also benefit from a new Volkswagen powertrain, rated to yield a "system power" value of up to 150kW (equivalent to 204 horsepower (HP) and 200kW (272 HP) respectively.

Then again, even Volkswagen estimates its new PHEV's electric range at up to 131 kilometer (km, or ~81 miles) for the eHybrid, whereas the GTE might travel 143km (~89 miles) at most per charge.

Then again, that range is of course estimated to stretch to about 1,000km (~621 miles) when the new 1.5-litre turbocharged (TSI evo2) variable-turbocharger geometry (VTG) petrol engine and its tank kick in.

A new Golf in PHEV flavor will not exactly come cheap, however, with prices starting at €44,240 (~$48,000) for the eHybrid and €46,745 (~$50,800) for the GTE model on their release to the European market.

Then again, they do come with perks such as a 12.9-inch touch display, the region's first LED VW badge (as an option) and new colors such as Anemone Blue, Grenadilla Black and Oyster Silver metallics.
