The ID.2 series of new Volkswagen EVs is thought to target the sub-$35,000 market on its 2026 launch - however, some of its members might prove more inspiring than its starting price might suggest.
They might include the ID.2 GTI, now thought to have about 286bhp with front-wheel drive. However, it might be left in the dust by its newly-rumored 2 R sibling.
As the name suggests, it might launch as a version of the hatchback car souped up by Volkswagen's R Division to have up to 400bhp.
The ID.2 R is also thought to be the first car to rock the MEB Plus platform, which might allow for motors directly bound to either rear wheel.
The design is projected to have 3 main advantages: to reduce weight; to maximise the 2 R's trunk space by keeping a second motor away from that part of the car, and to make it all-wheel-drive (AWD) instead.
The potential ID.2-series flagship is also thought to support performance-focused technologies such as dynamic drive, predictive torque distribution and brake-based yaw control modes, although it may not arrive until after 2027 when its X sibling is announced.
