Both first- and second-generation Rivian R1T and R1S EVs are finally getting a much-requested update to navigation thanks to Google Maps integration. Rivian drivers should start seeing the update as there are no rollout timelines shared by the company.

Rivian drivers have not had the best experience with the default navigation system in the R1T and R1S EVs. They have been asking for a better alternative or a replacement and Rivian has finally listened. The company has announced Google Maps integration for its cars that will offer more accurate ETAs, more trustworthy navigation, and all other features of Google Maps including Satellite imagery.

When it comes to Navigation, Rivian has seen a lot of user complaints regarding its current Mapbox-based software. The Rivian subreddit has numerous complaints about how routing is inefficient, ETAs are inaccurate, and traffic updates are lacking. With update version 2025.22 for the first (2022 to 2024) and second generation (2025) R1T and R1S EVs, Google Maps will be seamlessly integrated into the Rivian navigation system, replacing the Mapbox platform.

“This partnership brings drivers the best of both worlds: industry-leading mapping technology and fresh information from Google Maps alongside Rivian’s design and core EV-friendly functionality. Customers can expect top-quality navigation with the Rivian user experience and critical features like range on arrival estimates, charging scores, and charging stop selection,” the official update announcement reads.

The improvements include Tappable points of interest (POIs) as users can now tap on places of interest on the map and learn more about them. Google Maps’ Satellite imagery feature is also included in the update but for that, users will need the Connect+ subscription.

The update also brings additional features like Launch Cam for the second-generation tri and quad-motor models. This allows users to record Launch mode from five camera angles and get live telemetry overlay with details like peak G-force, reaction time, 0-60 times, and quarter-mile times. The second-generation cars also get new control software for ride and handling maneuvers. This is said to improve ride comfort and roll control when cornering.
