While some electric vehicle makers seem to be getting cold feet thanks to somewhat slowing sales, Volkswagen appears to be charging ahead, confident as ever, into the electric future. Speaking to Reuters, Reinhard Fischer, Volkswagen Group of America's senior vice president and head of strategy, divulged that the brand is planning a US-built affordable EV.
It's unclear what shape the affordable EV will take — although a compact cross-over SUV seems likely, given the segment's US popularity — but the VW exec did indicate that the EV would cost less than US$35,000. VW also plans on building the new electric car in North America — likely in the US or Mexico — making it eligible for the US EV tax incentives via the Inflation Reduction Act.
"We are not scaling back plans for EVs in the U.S. market." – Reinhard Fischer, vice president, head of strategy, VW Group of America.
This renewed commitment to the US electric vehicle market comes hot on the heels of news that many EV makers are adjusting their projections and production targets due to reduced demand. Currently, VW is targeting a 2026 production window for the ID. 2all compact hatchback, which it plans on launching in Europe at a price of under €25,000. The predicted European launch of the ID. 2all puts it right around the same timeframe as the "three to four years" mentioned by Fischer.
Until now, there has been no word of a US launch of a production version of the ID. 2all, but the official confirmation that an affordable VW EV is coming to the US may indicate that the brand will eventually bring the ID. 2all or even the ID.3 or ID. GTI hot hatch to North American shores.
???? #GTI – in the world of VW, these three letters are as iconic as the Golf itself. GTI stands for: design, legend, a way of life.
