Volkswagen has announced that its third-gen Tiguan will be available as a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) for the first time. The SUV will also make the switch to an automatic gearbox and options such as massaging seats and new headlights to also feature in the next Tuareg. The new Tiguan will also have a revamped interior, a new infotainment system with a ~15-inch display included.

Volkswagen has revealed that the upcoming, 3rd-gen Tiguan will be available with turbodiesel (TDI) and turbocharged petrol (TSI) variants - in addition to mild hybrid turbocharged petrol (eTSI) and plug-in hybrid (eHybrid) siblings.

The marque's "currently best-selling model" is going PHEV for the first time thanks to its new MQB evo "modular transverse matrix". This new drive is rated to boost range by up to 100 kilometers (km, or ~62 miles) compared to its forebears, and to support faster charging in the new Tiguan.

The MQB evo is also backed to deliver a comfortable yet effective drive, supporting an electronically-controlled suspension system with the same vehicle dynamics manager as the latest Golf GTI.

PHEV or not, Volkswagen has also announced that the Tiguan will be automatic, with the same steering-column drive-reverse switch and paddles of the ID. series. The car is also now backed to move closer to its higher-end Touareg counterpart, in that both upcoming SUVs will debut with new IQ.LIGHT HD matrix headlights.

There will also have the option of front seats with ergoActive massaging and lumbar support technology, as part of a new cockpit with "high-quality materials", an optional "acoustic package" and a new "intuitive, logical" infotainment system. This upcoming, potentially vastly updated, Tiguan will have its "world premiere" in the fall of 2023 ahead of its ultimate 2024 launch.
