A report analysing automotive trends has revealed that, in the period between January and April, the Tesla Model Y saw more new sales than any vehicle except the Ford F-150. Teslas were also the only electric vehicles to make it into the top 20 when it came to new vehicle registrations, defying the US trend towards massive SUVs and pickup trucks.

The Model Y has long held top spot in Tesla's sales numbers, significantly outperforming its own Tesla stablemates in global and US sales by leaps and bounds and even claiming top spot as the world's best-selling vehicle for a while. According to the Experian Automotive Market Trends report [file], it has done even better in the first quarter of 2023.

Probably thanks to a steady increase in EV adoption and substantial price cuts to Tesla's whole line-up, the Model Y has overtaken the likes of the Chevrolet Silverado, Toyota Camry, and Toyota RAV4 to claim second-place, up from sixth just last year. In terms of market share, the Model Y represented 2.5% of all new vehicle sales in Q1 2023 — an increase of over 99% over the same period last year — while the Ford F-150 claimed 3.1% for the same period.

Tesla is thus far the sole EV-only brand in the top 20, and the Model Y is the only electric vehicle to make it into the top 10. The Tesla Model 3 scored 13th, just below the RAM 1500 and ahead of the Toyota Corolla and GMC Sierra 1500. The Chevrolet Equinox came in 11th, which indicates that the upcoming Equinox EV could shake up the industry if it proves to be as popular as its gasoline-powered forbear.
