Cheapest Tesla Model Y RWD base model now also being made in Germany
Since the beginning of last year, the American EV pioneer Tesla has manufactured its most successful SUV, the Model Y, at its brand-new Gigafactory close to the German capital of Berlin. However, not all model variants of the global bestseller had been produced at the new plant so far, which was a rather disappointing situation for some budget-oriented European buyers.
But as InsideEVs has noticed earlier this week, the most affordable trim of the Tesla Model Y, which is currently priced around €45,000 and is equipped with a single-motor rear-wheel drivetrain, is now also being made in Germany and therefore available in two special paint colors called "Quicksilver" and "Midnight Cherry Red". According to the configurator, these colors still cost an extra €3,000 and €3,200, respectively, and were specifically designed for the new Gigafactory Berlin and its state-of-the-art paint shop. Previously, the affordable RWD model was imported from Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai, China.
Before this recent change, only the two popular AWD model variants of the Tesla Model Y were manufactured at Giga Berlin - the long-range version with up to 533 kilometers per charge and the lightning-quick performance trim. In addition to the shorter and more efficient delivery for prospective Tesla owners in Europe, car shoppers now also have to pay around €10,000 less for a Model Y that was “made in Germany”. It remains to be seen if the production of the Model 3 will also shift to the EV makers most advanced factory, but as of today, the European version of the sedan is still imported from China.
