Between 2015 and 2018, Tesla planned the opening of its first gigafactory in Europe, but the location and details of the Giga Berlin/Gigafactory 4 were announced by Elon Musk in November 2019. The official opening took place in late March 2022, and the facility started pumping out the Model Y Performance with 2170-cells by the end of April. With 12,000 employees and an annual production of 250,000 vehicles, Tesla's only production facility in Europe could expand to hit a volume of 1 million vehicles per year in the long run, but market conditions are currently keeping this plan on hold.
Last month, Tesla announced that 500 temporary workers would get permanent jobs starting November 1st. Earlier today, the company also unveiled that all employees from the German gigafactory received a 4% wage increase starting this month. According to human resources director Erik Demmler,
"This is further particularly welcome news for our workforce - especially at a time when many companies in the German automotive industry are talking about job cuts and plant closures."
Reuters reports that Tesla did not extend the collaboration with some subcontractors and also conducted voluntary staff reductions earlier this year as part of its cost-cutting efforts. However, this did not involve pay cuts. At the same time, Europe's largest carmaker, namely Volkswagen, is currently asking workers to accept a 10% pay cut to keep their jobs while allowing the company to remain competitive.
Tesla owners who are looking for a proper way to keep their cars' dashboards in one piece can get Spigen's tempered glass screen protector, GlasTR EZ FIT, for $39.99 off Amazon. This matte/anti-fingerprint protector was designed for the 15-inch touchscreen of the Tesla Model 3 (2013-2017) and Tesla Model Y (2020-2024).
