With almost 3,000 more registrations than the venerable Volkswagen Golf, the Tesla Model Y has become the best-selling car in Germany just a few months after the production of the electric SUV has started in Tesla's new Gigafactory Berlin. Furthermore, the Tesla Model 3 remains very popular in Europe's second most-populated country.

The compact Volkswagen Golf is an absolute success as it has been one of the best-selling vehicles in Germany for several decades. But in the emerging age of electromobility, Volkswagen’s bestseller has to face some new and pretty fierce all-electric competitors. These do not just include the Volkswagen ID.4 and the much larger ID.5, but also two of the most notable EVs from an American company, the incredibly successful Tesla Model Y and Model 3.

According to a recently published statistic by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority, the aforementioned Tesla Model Y has now taken the place of the Volkswagen Golf as the best-selling car in the most important European market for carmakers. This news comes just months after Tesla officially kicked off the production of its electric SUV in the new Gigafactory Berlin. A total of 9,846 Tesla Model Y vehicles have been registered in Germany in September 2022, while the Volkswagen Golf only accounted for roughly 7,000 registrations over the same time period. Even the approximately 6,000 newly registered Volkswagen Tiguan were no match for the new top dog.

Needless to say, the Tesla Model Y also dominated the SUV segment in addition to gaining the top position in the overall ranking. Meanwhile, the Tesla Model 3 managed to top the mid-size sedan segment. The German authority counted almost 4,000 new registrations of Tesla’s most affordable electric sedan in September. In conclusion, this new registration statistic can arguably be interpreted as a slap in the face for Germany’s largest automaker, who has been dominant in its home market for so many years. It now may have lost this position by underestimating the rapidly increasing demand for electric vehicles such as the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y.
