Volkswagen ID.4 owner rips German automaker for "abandoning" its drivers due to persistent software issues
Modern electric cars are known to be fairly complicated "technical devices" whose electrical components can only work in conjunction with pretty sophisticated software. Undoubtedly, this also applies to the popular Volkswagen ID.4, but the electric SUV from Wolfsburg, Germany is still struggling with some major software problems that haven’t been fixed with an according update.
This unfortunate situation has now been sharply criticized by the well-known YouTuber Alex Guberman. On his channel called “E for Electric”, Guberman reiterated that he has owned a Volkswagen ID.4 1st Edition for over a year now, but that the electric SUV continuously confronts him with a bunch of annoying software issues even after several software updates. For example, the tire pressure monitoring system often issues completely unnecessary warnings, and the rearview camera of his Volkswagen ID.4 does not always work as intended.
The Android Auto connection between his smartphone and the car is rather unreliable as it tends to get interrupted while driving the Volkswagen ID.4, but this may also be caused by the rather buggy Google Pixel 6a. Either way, the infotainment system of his electric Volkswagen SUV appears to boot very slowly, often crashes and randomly restarts on a regular basis. In addition, there seem to be various issues with Volkswagen's redesigned app for Android. Certain functions, such as remotely activating the air conditioning, are sometimes met with a significant delay.
All in all, there appear to be an abundance of more or less small software bugs and issues, which can certainly lead to an unsatisfactory ownership and driving experience with the VW ID.4. Even though many of these complaints are coming from drivers and ID.4 owners in the US, similar reports have surfaced in Volkswagen’s home market Germany, which clearly indicates that these are not isolated incidents. One can only hope that the German automaker will soon rectify the situation by issuing the according OTA software updates for the Volkswagen ID.4.
