After the expensive Silverado electric pickup, Chevrolet teases a US$30,000 Equinox EV

Chevrolet will be releasing a number of new electric vehicles starting next spring with the Silverado Work Truck fleet pickup, and continuing with its performance RST version in fall 2023. The real electric bestseller of Chevy, however, may be an Equinox crossover EV that will start from just US$30,000 when it gets released in 2024, and it will be followed by a full-size Blazer electric SUV model.

Just as expected, Chevrolet will be dabbling in electric cars based on the Ultium EV platform of parent company General Motors that the electric Hummer uses. Chevy already teased a Silverado electric pickup truck, and it now used the CES 2022 expo to tip that an affordable Chevrolet Equinox crossover SUV is in the works, too. Given the purported US$30,000 Chevy Equinox EV price before delivery charges and subsidies, the crossover may turn out to be GM's real electric sales hit, rather than the more expensive Hummer or the Silverado pickup. Chevy will also have a full-size Blazer electric SUV, and all of these models will be arriving after 2022 rolls out. The 2023-2024 release timeframe for the new Chevrolet EVs makes the US$30,000 Chevy Equinox EV price tag somewhat explicable, as by then batteries may have fallen in price and grown in specs.

First in line for a 2023 release will be the Chevrolet Silverado electric pickup truck, and its two models. The Silverado EV RST First Edition will cost US$105,000 plus the US$1,695 destination charge, but before eventual subsidies. The RST will sport motors with 664 HP of combined output and more than 780 lb-ft of torque in the dedicated "Wide Open Watts" mode. That power will be able to propel Chevy's top-of-the-line electric pickup from 0-60 mph in less than 4.5 seconds. The RST First Edition will have 350 kW DC fast charging circuitry so that you can top it up for a 100 more miles of driving in 10 minutes.

The 350 kW charging ability will also be available on a Silverado EV WT (for Work Truck) model that is destined for fleet vehicles, which will be released as soon as spring 2023. Just like the RST, the WT will be able to cover 400 miles on a charge but will have slightly less, 1,200 vs 1,300 pounds of payload capacity, and 8,000 pounds vs 10,000 of towing when compared to the more expensive Chevy Silverado RST. Chevrolet is keeping mum on the exact specs of the affordable Equinox EV, and we only know that it will be available in LT and RS trims, or in a fleet version just like Chevy's Silverado electric pickup.
