New Chevy Silverado EV will only get Tesla charging port in 2025 to fill monstrous 200kWh battery

The new 8,500-pound Silverado electric pickup truck by Chevrolet has a giant 200 kWh battery pack that takes a while to be filled even on faster chargers. Direct access to the vast network of Tesla Superchargers, however, isn't coming before the 2025 model year.

General Motors, as well as Ford and Rivian, recently announced that they will be adopting Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) going forward, so that their customers can have direct access to the largest EV charging network in the US. Not only did Tesla install 58% of the new DC fast chargers in the US so far this year, but the NACS port and connector combo is more compact than the global CCS solution, too.

Unfortunately, Chevrolet just confirmed that its new hulking Silverado EV pickup will only get a Tesla port that will give it direct Supercharger access for the 2025 model year. For all the brouhaha around GM, Ford, and Rivian's NACS adoption, that won't happen overnight, and Tesla charging ports will be installed on their EVs in earnest towards the tail end of 2024 at the earliest.

Chevy detailed the Silverado EV price and trims further, doling out drive tests and previews of the 8,500-pound gorilla of an electric pickup that will be delivered to fleets in the next couple of weeks. The trim with a giant 200 kWh battery pack starts from US$77,905 and has more than 450 miles of estimated EPA range on a charge.

While the Chevy Silverado EV offers fast charging and tests showed it can sustain 200+ kW charging speeds, it would still take quite some time to fill its giant battery even on the most powerful DC chargers currently available. Charging overnight at home on regular outlets can take anywhere from 10-20 hours, depending on their voltage, too. Having direct access to Tesla Superchargers would be great for a truck with such a giant battery, but until the Chevy Silverado EV 2025 model year, owners will have to make do with adapters.
