Volvo joins Ford, GM, Rivian on Tesla NACS hype train with new charging hardware from 2025
Hot on the heels of the announcement of its diminutive EX30 compact SUV, Volvo has announced that it will be joining Ford, General Motors, and Rivian in their adoption of the NACS charging hardware. Starting in 2025, all Volvo electric vehicles will have Tesla NACS charging ports installed from the factory and access to Tesla's vast Supercharger network.
Moving towards NACS gives Volvo access to DC fast charging at over 12,000 Tesla Superchargers in the US, and existing Volvo cars will be able to use Tesla chargers with an adaptor starting in the first half of 2024. The Volvo Cars app will also now help its users find Tesla charging points. Volvo claims that it made the move to NACS to reduce the friction of adopting electric vehicles, but a more trustworthy charging network is surely an attractive prospect for potential Volvo buyers, which is bound to also help Volvo's bottom line.
Volvo's NACS announcement does not make mention of its Polestar subsidiary, but given that Polestar's vehicles are often built on the same platform as Volvo's, it wouldn't be surprising to see the the performance electric car company make the same shift towards NACS.
