Tesla Superchargers now count Rivian, Ford, and GM as early adopters
After Ford and GM, Rivian announced that it will be the next electric vehicle manufacturer in the US to adopt Tesla's open-source North American Charging Standard (NACS) plugs and ports. This will allow future owners of the Rivian R1T and R1S to top up at Tesla Superchargers directly, eschewing the need for a CCS adapter or a Magic Dock-equipped Supercharger.
The transition to Tesla's NACS won't happen overnight, cautions Rivian, as it will only start installing Supercharger-compatible ports in its electric vehicles in 2025. In the meantime, however, Rivian will provide NACS adapters to current owners of the R1T or R1S next spring, so that they can use more than 12,000 Tesla Supercharger stations across the US and Canada.
According to Rebecca Tinucci, Senior Director of Charging Infrastructure, Tesla welcomes the Rivian adoption of NACS for the greater benefit of the industry as a whole:
It’s great to see the industry coming together to adopt the North American Charging Standard. By doing so, we’re collectively ensuring all EV drivers have access to easy to use, reliable charging hardware. We look forward to welcoming Rivian owners to thousands of our Superchargers across North America.
Rivian also said that it will use Tesla's NACS ports in its next generation EV platform dubbed R2, as it is preparing to bring cheaper Rivian R1T pickups with LFP batteries, too. The automaker isn't giving up on its own EV charging stations collectively known as the Rivian Adventure Network, though, and will work on expanding it nationwide just as before.
