Hyundai next-gen platform hints at cheap EVs, potential Cybertruck competitor incoming
During a recent Hyundai investor day, Hyundai announced that it would be updating its modular vehicle platform, replacing the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) with the Integrated Modular Architecture. According to Hyundai Motor Company's CEO, Jaehoon Chang, the new EV platform will be adaptable to basically any segment, with a specific mention of pickup trucks thrown in the mix.
Hyundai intends for the new platform to replace E-GMP, which was basically only suited for mid-sized SUV or vehicles of a similar size. The IMA's secret sauce lies in modularity that allows over 80 modules that can be shared across vehicle types, instead of the current system that only allows for a sharing of components among similar vehicle types.
In the second-generation platform, the scope of vehicle development extends beyond the mid-sized SUVs covered by the current E-GMP system. It encompasses nearly all vehicle classes, ranging from small and large SUVs to pickup trucks, along with the flagship models of the Genesis brand. - Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO, Hyundai Motor Company.
There are a number of benefits to using a modular architecture like this, but chief among them are accelerated development timelines and reduced cost. Hyundai aims to use these benefits to accelerate its EV strategy to introduce 13 new electric vehicles by 2030.
If the hints are anything to go by, one of the 13 new models will be an electric pickup truck, perhaps coming for the likes of the Cybertruck and Ford F-150 Lightning, reinforcing previous reports of an electric mid-sized pickup truck coming from Kia for international markets. The compact Hyundai Santa Cruz could also be an electrification candidate, since it has seen some moderate success since its launch.
