Volkswagen has introduced its latest flagship SUV as a plug-in hybrid that will, as such, be able to handle acceleration off the line as it will in practical uses such as towing. The new Touareg R eHybrid is also backed to look good doing either, with "re-designed" front and back ends, a new matte finish and some high-tech tweaks in common with some ID.-series vehicles. The marque's "absolute top model" is available to order in Europe from now.

Volkswagen asserts that the new Touareg R eHybrid will be as much of a powerhouse in rugged settings as it will when it comes to flexing on city streets. its new 6-cylinder, 3.0 litre turbocharged engine and electric drive combine for an output of 340 kilowatts (kW), equivalent to 462 horsepower and a torque rating of 700 newton-meters (Nm).

It is also rated to bear trailers of up to 3.5 tonnes in total weight, and has a roof load sensor to help inform the "stability and precision" of its suspension. Nevertheless, the Touareg R eHybrid is also hyped for ultimate comfort, with a new "Innovision Cockpit" design, 4-zone air conditioning and the option of Vienna-style leather seats.

The new Tuareg also debuts the new >38,000-LED IQ.LIGHT HD matrix headlights also slated to feature in the upcoming 2024 Tiguan PHEV. Its flagship counterpart is also compatible with the new 'remote control parking' feature (Park Assist Pro) found in the new ID.7.

Accordingly, the hybrid SUV is painted as business-like when not outright practical. Nevertheless, Volkswagen is confident that it will be easily recognizable as an R variant, with an ID. Buzz level of attention paid to its interior detailing (except with logos from its series in place of little minibus silhouettes), down to the branded blue brake calipers.

Furthermore, the marque has prepared a new Silicon Grey Matt paint option along with the legacy Lapiz Blue metallic finish. All this will not come cheap, however: the base model Touareg R eHybrid has been priced at €93,870 (~US$101,957).
