Qualcomm is geared to release the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus next month but already has its sights set on its next-gen flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Supposedly, that chipset could arrive sooner than its traditionally expected to.
According to Digital Chat Station, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is on its way. It appears Qualcomm is fast-tracking the production of its chipsets this year, starting with the SM8475—the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus. While Qualcomm's "Plus" model chipsets have generally debuted in Q3, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus is set to launch months ahead of schedule likely due to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1's lackluster reception.
Reputedly, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2—SM8550—will arrive a bit quicker than one would expect. Previous Qualcomm flagship chipsets have usually launched at the very end of the year but the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 could be different. Perhaps, an October release? The leaker is vague. Either way, an earlier release would likely see flagships like the Xiaomi 13 series debut ahead of normal schedule as well.
Digital Chat Station also seems to imply that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will be built on TSMC's 4 nm node. That's expected as the Taiwanese company's 3 nm fab has been said to be unready for mass production until late '22 or early '23.
