Qualcomm has just released the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor as its latest flagship processor with a re-worked name to boot. Now, a Weibo-based chip industry leaker asserts that the OEM is working on its successor already. This possibly accelerated timeline might be related to MediaTek's rising status in the same field.

Smartphone OEMs are reportedly falling over themselves to get their new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1-powered flagships on the market early. Unfortunately for them, there are rumors that this top-end processor's successor is already in the works.

The tipster Mobile Chip Masters asserts that this is the case, and that Qualcomm aims to ship it as early as May 2022. According to the leaker, the OEM has done so in order to secure valuable time on the 4nm manufacturing node run by TSMC, which has apparently been engaged to produce the "8 Gen 2" in volumes even greater than those of either the Gen 1 or MediaTek's competing Dimensity 9000.

On that note, the "threat" posed by the 9000 is framed as Qualcomm's motivation in this leak: apparently, this plan would make the OEM TSMC's 2nd biggest customer, pushing MediaTek down to approximately 4th. Then again, the "Gen 2" referred to in this post could in fact be the 'second wave' of the Gen 1 said to have been ported to TSMC's process from that of Samsung in an earlier leak.
