MediaTek took the smartphone SoC crown from Qualcomm in the second quarter of 2021 (2Q2021); now, Counterpoint Research's latest report shows that this was likely not just a flash in the pan. The Taiwanese chip-maker made a 40% gain in terms of shipments compared to 3Q2020, whereas Qualcomm had a decline of 1%.
Then again, the US company is still the market leader when it comes to 5G baseband sales, whereas MediaTek has derived its most recent success from both 4G/LTE- and 5G-capable chipsets. Meanwhile, Apple's shipments rose from 12% in 3Q2020 to 15% in 3Q2021 to remain #3 in the market overall.
Meanwhile, Unisoc made an impressive 6% year-on-year (YoY) gain to a 10% share and a #4 place in the market overall. However, it was not all rosy for every OEM in the market. Samsung's share dropped by 5% YoY to 5%, serendipitously, leaving it fifth in the market. However, Huawei's HiSilicon may have had the worst among top-10 individual brands, posting a YoY loss of 11% to post a share of 2% in 3Q2021.
