Huawei's latest MateBook X Pro has debuted with the OEM's new Free Touch feature, which consists of a trackpad capable of responding to a variety of gestures, as some phones' screens might. It also offers the company's "finest display yet": a 14-inch 3K touch panel driven by Tiger Lake silicon.

Huawei has launched its newest laptop alongside other devices such as the Watch D today (December 23, 2021) as the Matebook X Pro 2022. Despite this refreshed title, it has launched with SKUs that go up to a Core i7-1195G7 processor (paired to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of internal storage), rather than an Alder Lake counterpart.

The OEM may compensate for that with what it touts as its finest display for a laptop yet. The X Pro 2022's 14-inch screen has a 3120 x 2080 resolution, a 90Hz display and boast the world's first ever TÜV Rheinland Pro-level Colour Accuracy with Dual Color Gamuts Certification conferred laptop.

The X Pro 2022 is also rated to support a "3D Lut professional color calibration"; then again, there is no mention of OLED here. The new laptop pairs this panel (surrounded with 6mm bezels that still finally manage to accommodate a webcam) with Huawei Sound speakers, contained in an ultra-thin metal, CNC-finished unibody weighing just 1.38 kilograms (kg).

Earlier teasers had suggested that this chassis might support completely hands-off gestures; however, it seems that this translates to touchscreen control in reality. On the other hand, the X Pro 2022 does introduce Huawei Free Touch, a trackpad with enhanced "100% coverage".

This input method allows for 6 specific gestures that activate screenshot, screen recording, the notification center, and controls for brightness, volume and media. The first 2 are even knuckle-enabled, which might be familiar to fans of a certain former smartphone OEM.

Finally, the Matebook X Pro 2022 incorporates dual "Shark Fin" fans, augmented with "ultra slim vapor chamber heat dissipation modules", and charges using a GaN power brick that connects to 1 of the PC's 4 USB type-C ports, and is rated to deliver an estimated 2 hours of screen-on time following just 15 minutes of being plugged in.

The new laptop has been released as an i5/16GB/512GB SKU priced at 9,499 yuan (~US$1,491), a i7/16GB/512GB unit at 10,499 yuan (~$1,648), and a i7+16GB+1TB top-end model at 12,499 yuan (~$1,962). It is up for pre-order from now, or will be sold as normal from January 6, 2022.
