Vivo, not Samsung, is the first manufacturer to turn a foldable into a real flagship camera without too many compromises - at least according to the conclusion of a detailed teardown analysis, which also provides a few measurement results and Zeiss camera samples from the Vivo X Fold3 Pro.

Last week, Vivo presented what is de facto the lightest and thinnest foldable to date, the Vivo X Fold3. This was also accompanied by a more powerful sibling, the Vivo X Fold3 Pro, which is not only waterproof according to IPx8 (like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5), but also aims to set new standards in terms of cameras and battery life without adding too much weight or thickness.

One of the best-known teardown experts from China, whose WekiHome YouTube channel is also accessible outside mainland China, took a look inside the Vivo X Fold3 Pro in order to see whether it delivers what it promises on the outside. In the usual professional manner, the black Vivo X Fold3 Pro is disassembled into its individual parts, analyzed and then reassembled. Since YouTube supports real-time transcription in other languages, viewers can follow the process without knowledge of Mandarin.

Below are a few screenshots showing some of the highlights from the video (see below). From minute 4 to around minute 6, several camera samples from the Zeiss Triple Cam can be seen, which has already delivered some impressive photos from the Antarctic, especially considering that we are dealing with a foldable here instead of a classic smartphone. The tester also provides some measurements, such as for the two displays and the dual 5700 mAh battery.

The first almost-uncompromising flagship camera foldable

Vivo has reduced the weight and thickness compared to the predecessor, mainly by cutting back on the housing, hinge and some components, but without sacrificing features or reducing quality, at least according to the conclusion of the teardown expert. The price and resistance to dust are certainly not at the level of a classic glass sandwich design, and the flexible inner display is unlikely to be immune to scratches. Nevertheless, Vivo is said to have achieved the practically impossible, that is, transplanting the full performance and camera quality of a classic flagship into a barely thicker and heavier foldable. Incidentally, a global model has already been spotted, and those who want to import from China can do so here. However, there are several points to keep in mind when considering an import:

  • The Chinese model does not have an eSIM; at least there is no mention of this in the data sheet (an eSIM is likely to be included in the global model).
  • Android Auto does not work, and payment services such as Google Pay appear to work for the most part, although there are still occasional reports of problems with the Chinese models when receiving notifications.
  • It remains difficult to assess just how well certain features, such as multitasking or the new Mac/Windows computer functions, will work in the West.
  • Last but not least, it should be noted that the warranty conditions (as well as the likelihood of being able to enforce these) are of course not comparable with those of retailers in Europe or the USA.
