Far Cry 5 puts players in the role of a nameless deputy battling the fanatical cult Eden’s Gate in the fictional Hope County, Montana. Led by the charismatic yet ruthless Joseph Seed, known as The Father, the cult has turned the rural region into a violent theocracy. Convinced the apocalypse is near, they rule through fear, brainwashing and brute force. Players join resistance groups to reclaim Hope County, facing Joseph’s siblings, Jacob, John and Faith, who each control their own territory. To bring down the cult, they must dismantle its leadership before ultimately confronting Joseph Seed himself. While the game delivers plenty of shocking moments, many players found the story rather shallow.
In terms of gameplay, Far Cry 5 sticks to the series’ signature open-world design while introducing some fresh elements. For the first time, players can fully customize their character, including gender and appearance. The game also ditches the traditional tower mechanic for revealing the map, instead encouraging exploration and interactions with NPCs to uncover new locations. The fight against Eden’s Gate revolves around the resistance system: Completing missions raises resistance levels in each region, making the cult more aggressive. However, mission structures tend to repeat, leading to criticism of the game’s repetitive gameplay.
A standout feature is the Guns for Hire system, allowing players to recruit AI-controlled allies with unique skills, ranging from snipers and explosives experts to animal companions like the loyal attack dog Boomer or the bear Cheeseburger. Players also have a diverse arsenal at their disposal, including assault rifles, bows, dynamite and improvised weapons like shovels. For those who enjoy teaming up, Far Cry 5 also includes a co-op mode, adding to its social appeal.
Predominantly positive reviews
Players praise Far Cry 5 for its vast open world, detailed landscapes and impressive lighting effects. The game's large scope and co-op mode are also well received. However, it faces criticism for its shallow story, repetitive gameplay and inconsistent enemy AI. According to Howlongtobeat, completing all the side quests will keep you busy for over 45 hours. On Metacritic, the game holds a Metascore of 78 and a User Score of 6.4. Meanwhile, on Steam, it boasts around 150,000 reviews, with 80% positive feedback.
